Healthy Menopausal Years - the Wise Woman Way

Menopause is a time of enormous change. Wise women of all times have found simple life-style changes can make their Change much easier. For optimum health during and after menopause, follow these simple steps:

  • Exercise a different way every day: take walks, lift weights, dance, garden, do yoga, try tai chi.

  • Drink nourishing herbal infusions.


We all know how important exercise is for strong bones, healthy hearts, resistance to diabetes, and weight maintenance. But did you know it prevents depression too? By yourself, or with a friend, exercise is one of the golden keys to a long, healthy life.

Nourishing herbal infusions are the second key to vibrant elder years and an easier menopause. They provide protein, minerals, phytoestrogens, and special fats needed by menopausal women. Many common menopausal problems can be connected to a lack of one or more of these nutrients.

  • Fill jar to the top with boiling water. Cap tightly and allow it to brew for at least four hours. Overnight is fine.

  • Strain and drink 2-4 cups a day. Most menopausal women prefer their infusion iced, but you can drink it hot or at room temperature. A little mint or sage may be added to change the flavor.


Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) builds energy, strengthens the adrenals, and is said to restore youthful flexibility to blood vessels. A cup of nettle infusion contains 500 milligrams of calcium plus generous amounts of bone-building magnesium, potassium, silicon, boron, and zinc. It is also an excellent source of vitamins A, D, E, and K. For flexible bones, a healthy heart, thick hair, beautiful skin, and lots of energy, make friends with sister stinging nettle. It may make you feel so good you'll jump up and exercise.

Oatstraw (Avena sativa) reduces high cholesterol, increases libido, and strengthens the nerves. A cup of oatstraw infusion contains more than 300 milligrams of calcium plus generous amounts of many other minerals. Its steroidal saponins nourish the pancreas and liver, improving digestion and stabilizing moods. Oatstraw is best known however for its ability to enhance libido and mellow the mood. Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is better in every way than its cousin soy. It contains four phytoestrogens; soy has only one (isoflavone). Red clover infusion has ten times more phytoestrogens than soy "milk," fewer calories, more calcium, and no added sugars. Red clover is the world's leading anti-cancer herb; soy isoflavone encourages the growth of breast cancer cells in the lab. Red clover improves the memory; Japanese men who ate tofu twice a week doubled their risk of Alzheimer's disease. Soy beverage can contain up to 1000 times more aluminum than milk, according to Sally Fallon, lipid researcher and fat specialist. She believes that "the highly processed soy foods of today are perpetuating ... nutrient deficiencies ..."

Comfrey leaf (Symphytum) is free of the compounds (PAs) found in the root that can damage the liver. I have used comfrey leaf infusion regularly for decades with no liver problems; ditto for the group of people at the Henry Doubleday Research Foundation who have eaten cooked comfrey leaves as a vegetable for four generations. Comfrey is also known as "knitbone," and no better ally for the woman with thin bones can be found. And, don't forget, comfrey contains special proteins used in the formation of short-term memory cells. Its soothing mucilage adds flexibility to joints, eyes, vagina, and lungs.

A Few Brief Facts About Menopause

Menopause, commonly known as "change of life" is also often thought of as a disease, but just as menstruation is a normal phase or a natural process in a woman's life, so is menopause. It is a gradual process which takes place over a period of anywhere from six to fourteen years. There is actually no particular age for menopause, like there is no particular age for the beginning of menstruation. However, the average age assumed for menopause to take place is around 52 years. It can happen anywhere around the ages of 45 to 55 years. It is difficult to say when menopause actually begins, but it is said to be complete when a woman has not had her period for about a year. It is also been found that a woman reaches menopause roughly as the same age as her mother did.

It must be noted that if you have had your uterus and your ovaries surgically removed then you would almost immediately be in menopause, as there would be no ovaries to produce estrogen. But if only your uterus has been surgically removed without the ovaries then your ovaries would still produce the estrogen and you would not undergo menopause till your time is up.

There is no direct influence of race, number of children borne, the use of contraceptives, or the first time you begin menstruating on when you would reach menopause. However smoking is thought to be a factor for early menopause.

The different terms used in menopause are perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause. Perimenopause is known as when the actual changes are taking place. Menopause is the time when these changes are all completed. Postmenopause lasts for the rest of a woman's life and it is after menopause.

When you reach menopausal age you may notice certain changes in your period. The flow of your period, the length of time of your period, the occurrence may vary, also a more common occurrence would be hot flushes owing to the changes in the levels of your estrogen. Hot flushes are where you would suddenly feel rather warm during the day or even during the night.

The reduction in the hormone estrogen during menopause causes two conditions. One is Osteoporosis - as this hormone helps in the control of bone loss. Therefore, loss of estrogen means more bone is lost than is replaced causing the bones to become weak and as a result being more vulnerable to breakage. The other is heart disease - the reduction in the production of estrogen plus the fact of age could lead to this condition. It is best if one talks to ones doctor in order to maintain a healthy life during this period. Generally what he would recommend is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

Hormone treatment is of two kinds HRT or ERT, Hormone Replacement Therapy and Estrogen Replacement Therapy, respectively. HRT involves the hormones Estrogen plus Progesterone whilst ERT as the name implies, only Estrogen. However, ERT can only be undergone by women who have had a hysterectomy as an unlimited quantity of estrogen could give rise to uterine cancer. HRT is only recommended for women who have completely have had their periods stopped as during their period estrogen is still being produced. Hormone treatment is actually not a direct treatment for menopause but it is a preventive treatment for other health conditions. It must be noted that there could be several side effects to this treatment. However, this could be overcome by changing the dosage.

Menopause, it must be borne in mind, is not a disease, it is just "the next stage in your life". Here are some of the common myths:

Myth: It is believed that when you reach menopause that your ovaries dry up and waste away.

This is not true, what actually happens is that the ovaries gradually reduce the production of the hormone estrogen. This happens because the body does not require the high production of the hormone anymore.

Myth: Women lose libido at menopause.

Research has shown that there is no link between disinterest in sex and the low level of estrogen during menopause. Fifty percent of women are found to have no marked changed in libido during menopause.

Myth: Menopause causes depression.

Not true. Studies have shown that there are a greater percentage of depressed women in the thirty age group rather than in the menopausal age group, which is in the fifties.

Myth: The loss of estrogen during menopause does not have any serious consequences.

The loss of estrogen can bring about major risks in a woman's life. For example, she runs the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, colon cancer, just to name a few.

Myth: There is weight gain during menopause.

Some women actually lose weight, while some will gain weight, but it is not necessarily related to menopause. What will make you fat is probably not eating healthy food. Therefore, you should have a well balanced diet.

Myth: All women have symptoms.

It is generally thought that all women who reach menopause have the symptoms of mood swings, depression, hot flashes etc. Studies have shown that about fifteen percent of women do not have symptoms of menopause. The only symptom would be the stoppage of menstruation.

Myth: In hormone replacement therapy, the hormone estrogen is a natural hormone.

This is not true. All the hormonal drugs used in hormone replacement therapy are manufactured and are synthetic.

Myth: Menopause occurs at the age of 50.

There is no specific age for menopause. There is great variation. The average age is about 52. About one percent of women reach menopause at about 40 years or even younger. The average age span for menopause today is around 45 years of age to 55 years. However, if you have had your female reproductive organs surgically removed then you would automatically have reached menopause.

Myth: Menopause lasts only a few years.

Menopause can last from anywhere from six to fourteen years.

Myth: Menopause is very commonly mistaken for a disease.

It most definitely is not a disease; it is just another normal phase in a woman's life.

Myth: There is memory loss during menopause.

There may be occasional mood swings but there is no memory loss. Memory loss may be attributed to the aging factor and is not directly related to menopause. As men and women age, the brain reduces in size.

Myth: After menopause, women cannot enjoy sex.

It has been found that the majority of post menopausal women enjoy sex more than before menopause. This may be due to the fact that they do not have to worry about unwanted pregnancies.

Estrogen Deficiency and Natural Estrogen Replacment Benefits and Risks

Over the years doctors and researchers have theorized that menopause is a kind of estrogen deficiency syndrome, but no one knows for sure. �Natural estrogen replacement� is a term that may be used to describe different types of estrogen replacement therapies. Equine estrogen, which is derived from the urine of pregnant mares, can be referred to as �natural�, because the source is �natural� or non-synthetic. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy may be referred to as �natural�, because hormones from plants and animals are modified in the laboratory to be molecularly identical to human hormones. And, then there are dietary sources of plant estrogens, which are components of vitamin and herbal remedies for menopausal symptoms.

The primary role of estrogen in a woman�s body is to prepare the uterus to receive a fertilized egg, but researchers have shown that estrogen does much more than this. It affects the skin and the bones and possibly the brain. Natural estrogen replacement of any type is believed to counteract some of the affects of estrogen deficiency on a woman�s body.

The primary symptoms of estrogen deficiency are irregular or missed periods, as occurs in the years leading up to and during menopause. Women whose ovaries have been damaged or surgically removed experience menopause like symptoms, no matter what their age. Natural estrogen replacement therapy relieves their symptoms, which leads to the cause and effect theory that menopausal symptoms are symptoms of low estrogen levels

According to the North American Menopause Society, hormones play an important role in skin health. Menopausal symptoms that are almost certainly caused by an estrogen deficiency include a decline in collagen and thickness of the skin. This occurs mostly during the years immediately following menopause. The skin becomes less elastic, bruises and tears more easily. Any type of natural estrogen replacement may have beneficial effects on the skin, but most types are not recommended solely for this purpose, because of the numerous health risks associated with estrogen taken orally.

Researchers at the University of Melina in Italy, investigating plant or phytoestrogens found that isoflavones from red clover may be effective. Isoflavones are a type of plant estrogen and there is evidence supporting their use to treat other menopausal symptoms, so these scientists decided to investigate their effects on the skin. They concluded that supplements containing red clover isoflavones increased skin elasticity, collagen content and thickness, reducing the signs of skin aging, believed to be caused by sudden estrogen deficiency.

One of the best known of the estrogen deficiency symptoms is bone loss or osteoporosis. Until studies linked oral estrogens and synthetic hormone replacement therapy to serious health risks such as blood clots and strokes, it was often recommended to reduce the risk of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. Lack of estrogen inhibits the body�s ability to absorb calcium and vitamin D. Vitamin D is necessary for the body to effectively absorb calcium. Sun-screen which is necessary to protect the skin may also inhibit the body�s ability to activate vitamin D found in food. For this reason the North American Menopause Society advises that a vitamin D supplement may be necessary. The latest USRDA suggests that vitamin D supplements are probably necessary for anyone over the age of 50.

The body is able to absorb calcium most efficiently when iron, manganese, phosphorous, magnesium and vitamin C are present as well. Thus, a daily multi-vitamin containing adequate amounts of all of these nutrients, as well as vitamin D, provides the best insurance that a woman�s bones will continue to receive necessary amounts of calcium. Specialized health supplements designed for women containing plant estrogens may be even more effective, as the increase in dietary estrogenic compounds may counteract the estrogen deficiency that occurs when the ovaries stop functioning.

Vaginal dryness and thinness are similar to the estrogen deficiency symptoms that affect the skin. Since vaginal dryness and thinness can cause painful intercourse, women may experience a decreased sex drive as a result. This can create a kind of �vicious circle�, because lack of sexual stimulation may cause decreased blood flow to the genitals and a decrease in vaginal health, once again decreasing desire.

On the other hand, many women have found that they enjoy an increased sex drive following menopause. They feel an increased sense of freedom, because there is no longer a risk of pregnancy. For women who have the desire, but are bothered by dryness, any of the K-Y lubricants can help and there are some that are specifically designed to act on vaginal tissue to relieve dryness. Herbal sexual stimulants including ginseng and tribulus terrestris can increase libido. Tribulus may also increase levels of circulating hormones, thus acting as a natural estrogen replacement. Not all estrogen is produced by the ovaries. The adrenals produce some and other hormones are used by the body to create estrogens.

Tribulus is often recommended as a natural testosterone booster for men. Most medical literature focuses on natural estrogen replacement for women, but some researchers, doctors and scientists believe that low levels of testosterone may cause some of the problems that women have during menopause, particularly issues related to sexual desire. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy for women includes estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

At least one study has shown that estrogen improves the ability of the receptors in the hypothalamus to receive and transmit signals. The hypothalamus is a part of the brain in which memories are stored, is important in regulating mood, sleep and sexuality, among other functions.

The final conclusion is that estrogen deficiency following menopause can cause any number of symptoms ranging from those that affect the skin, the bones, the genitals and the brain. Any type of natural estrogen replacement therapy may relieve these symptoms, but certain ones should be used with caution and only for the shortest time possible. Equine estrogens, in particular, were studied by the Women�s Health Initiative and increase the risk of blood clots and stroke. Large scale studies concerning the long-term safety of other types of natural estrogen replacement have not been completed.

Correlating Menopause and Osteoporosis

Menopause occurs when there is not enough supply of estrogen in the body. With the absence of this important hormone in a woman�s body, there are lot of adjustments to be done and changes to prepare for.

Studies show that the loss of estrogens accelerates bone loss in the span of five to eight years. One of the most common areas affected by the loss of estrogen in the body is the skeletal system�specifically the bones that lead to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis, as defined, pertains to the thinning of the bones. As the bones become thinner and thinner, it becomes weaker and breaks more easily. The bones that are often affected include those of the spine, wrists, and hips.

COMBATING OSTEOPOROSIS CAUSED BY MENOPAUSE

As women grow older and older, risks of having osteoporosis becomes greater. Studies show that aside from aging, more and more women and men suffer become prone to osteoporosis especially if he/she has a family history of osteoporosis, fair skinned like blonds and red heads, engage in low calcium diet, lives a sedentary or physically inactive, underweight, obese, smokers and those with serious illness and disease.

In order to avoid, or at least, lessen the burden of having osteoporosis, here are some recommended lifestyle changes that you can do by yourself.

1. Have enough calcium in your body. In order to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, men women alike should start taking about 1,000 mg of calcium every day that is equals to about three serves of dairy food. Calcium is naturally found in various foods and can also be added in powder form. Having enough calcium supply in your diet will ensure strengthened bones. Aside from eating foods rich in calcium, taking in calcium tablets can also support your calcium supply. For those who are drinking calcium to avoid further osteoporic problem, bear in mind that you should reach a total daily intake of 1,000 milligrams daily before menopause and 1,500 milligrams daily after menopause.

2. Physical activity is quite crucial to avoid further complications of osteoporosis. Recent studies show that people with or without osteoporosis can also benefit from spontaneous physical activity. Doing regular exercises like walking throughout your life can help in the reduction of osteoporosis risks because it reduces the rate of bone loss while protecting the remaining bone tissues. Experts say that the required minimum exercise for people who are suffering with osteoporosis is still unknown, but physical activity of 15 to 60 minutes at least thrice a week in highly recommended. Here are some of the general recommendations for exercise approved by most experts.

- Make sure that you have visited your doctor or health care provider before you start any exercise program.

- If you are already suffering from osteoporosis, avoid high impact activities or those exercise requiring sudden and forceful movements.

- Light weight-bearing exercises such as walking, dancing, and weight training are generally recommended.

- Make sure that you can sustain the frequency of your physical activity.

- Take strength training at least once or twice a week to prepare your body to more strenuous physical activities.

- Choose exercises that flexibility exercises or stretching.

- No matter how you love the water, avoid swimming because it�s not a weight bearing exercise. The buoyancy of the water will only counteract the effects of gravity and will be more difficult for you to maintain your balance.

- Choose exercises that will help you reduce bone loss, improve your muscle strength, balance, and fitness so the incidence of falls and fractures will be lessened.

Indeed, there is no easy way to address osteoporosis. Being a complex condition involving hormonal, lifestyle, nutritional, and environmental factors, osteoporosis can only be cured through proper exercise, diet, and supplements. Aside from these, medical preventions and treatments such as hormone therapy (HT), Bisphosphonates, selective oestrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), potential therapies like Tibolone (Livial) and parathyroid hormone are available today.

Hot Flashes Are The Most Common Symptoms Of Menopause - But Relief Is Available

Hot flashes are symptoms of menopause, but may begin several years before menstruation actually stops and can last for several years afterwards. A hot flash may occur at any time of the day, but there are certain triggers that can worsen the severity and increase the frequency.

Doctors do not know exactly what causes hot flashes. They are considered a �vasomotor� symptom, because dilation of the blood vessels and changes in circulation are involved. They are believed to be directly related to decreasing estrogen production by the ovaries, a natural part of the aging process. Since, estrogen replacement therapy relieves hot flashes; lack of estrogen is probably the cause.

When a hot flash occurs at night, usually referred to as night sweats, it can interrupt a woman�s sleep, leading to insomnia, decreasing energy levels and overall sense of well being. A recent study indicates that the majority of peri-menopausal women do not feel that hot flashes affect their quality of life as much as emotional changes and mood swings, but mood swings sometimes trigger hot flashes. When a person is angry or frustrated, body temperature raises and anything that raises body temperature can trigger a hot flash.

Sometimes referred to as hot flushes, these sudden changes in body temperature are not believed to threaten a woman�s health. No medical treatment is required, unless they happen frequently, are severe or disruptive to a woman�s life. Most women can get relief by using an herbal supplement called black cohosh. This herb was used historically by Native American healers to correct symptoms related to hormonal imbalances, to help regulate menstrual cycles, as a diuretic and a mild sedative.

Research has shown that women get as much relief from hot flashes when using black cohosh as they do from estrogen replacement. It is highly recommended for women who can not risk estrogen replacement therapy, because of previous cancers or other concerns. Because, the Women�s Health Initiative found that the health benefits of hormone replacement therapy do not outweigh the risks, most doctors no longer recommend this treatment unless numerous symptoms are present and are severely impairing a woman�s ability to function, her relationships or her quality of life. Black cohosh, on the other hand, is being recommended more and more.

There are a number of substances that can trigger hot flashes. Experts advise women to avoid caffeine, salt, alcohol and nicotine. Spicy foods can also bring on a hot flash.
